Lesson 2.2: Categories and sub-categories

To create a new category

  1. Select the category which you want to appear above the new one, and click the Add Category button.
  2. Edit the Category Name and Category Amount text boxes with the name and expenditure associated with the new category.

To create a sub-category

  1. In the budget tree, click on the name of the category which will be the 'parent' to the sub-category.
  2. Click the Add sub-category button.
  3. An empty sub-category is created below the 'parent' category.
  4. In certain circumstances a second sub-category will be automatically created. This will occur when:
    1. this is the first sub-category to be created
    2. the parent category has a non-zero expenditure associated with it
This additional '-Other' sub-category holds the amount that was in the parent category. That amount still shows in the parent category but now represents the total of all sub-categories, and is itself no longer directly editable. Here is an example with Food as the parent category.:

It may be that you do not need or want this '-Other' category. In that case simply delete it (select it in the tree and click the Remove Category button).

Note: Non-editable categories

  1. Notice that the Budget Amount associated with the parent category is 'grayed out'. The amount in the parent category now represents the total of all the associated sub-categories, and will be automatically recalculated when any of them are edited, but can no longer be directly edited itself.
  2. The name of an -Other category is also not directly editable. This is to ensure that the parent name remains the first part of the -Other category name. So any edits of the parent name are automatically matched by a change in the -Other category name. Try this now by changing Food to Food and Drink. Press the enter key to confirm the edit. The -Other category name has automatically become Food and Drink-Other.
